When using the Component cable together with a Dock, the audio will not run through the component cable. Do I need to plug a 3,5 stereo jack as well?
When only using the component cable I can hear the sound. Is the dock splitting the sound signal from the Ipod/phone to the 3,5" audio plug? i.e. sound on the universal dock will only work through the 3,5" audio plug and nog through the main apple connector plug?

On its own, it is just a stand with a remote, basically. You don't need to buy cables if you want to hook it up to the computer, since the device you bought came with a cable which will plug into the back of this. Any other connections will require an additional cable of some sort.
