I have a ipod 3rd generation, is the second genaration the same as the 3rd?

AnswerYes. Stores just call them 3rd generation but apple will tell you they ARE 2nd generations. The way stores get away with this is because apple dropped the 16gb and added the 64gb so to the stores this is the 3rd generation. So as far as ordering accessories you want 2nd generation items. Hope this was helpful

Is there anyway to program laps in the iPod so one can run at different paces?
In some trainings one wants to run half speed throughout 30 seconds, walk 30 seconds, full speed, 30 seconds and again walk 30 seconds and repeat the sequence. Is there anyway to program such a routine?
