Can you just turn it on/off with a switch like a normal light for daily use? Without the App
- Asked by Jeff B from Appin
- Apr 26, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes you can. The lights do not work with dimmer switches but if you turn them off and on with the normal switch they will reset to a bright white light like a normal bulb.

Does my iPhone need to be connected to wifi to control the bulbs?
After initial set up, does my iPhone need to be connected to wifi to control the bulbs or can it work while running on 3g as well?
- Asked by Nicole M from Miami Lakes
- May 14, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerIt WILL work on 3G from the App. When you setup the app there is an option in the Settings menu to "Login to Portal". Once you've done that, after setting up an account on the Hue website, you can control the bulbs either from a website, *or* directly from your iPhone/iPad over 3G/LTE/etc.

How many watts are these light bulbs?
- Asked by Kevin P from Edgewater
- May 25, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerAround 8 to 9.5 watts each. But the shine with awesomeness. Due to the energy savings I use 3 bulbs in one studio apt. The lighting is vibrant. Clear, white for practical everyday use. These bulbs brightness rating 600 lumens, is just under a 60 Watt bulb. but never feel they don't illuminate enough as I use all three at the same time. I feel they are great energy savers my whole apt runs on under 30 watts, and is lit well. The hue can adjust for an incandescent feel, or fluorescent.

How bright is 600 lumens? What equivalent wattage of bulb does that equate to?
I'm not sure I've ever seen (or noticed) a lumens rating on any lightbulb I've ever bought, therefore have no frame of reference. Normally, energy saving bulbs tell you the equivalent wattage tungsten bulb they would be as bright as (e.g. 40W, 60W, 100W, etc.). So... how bright is 600 lumens compared to the bulbs I've been buying for the last 40 years?
- Asked by Richard C

Answer600 lumens is between 40w and 60W.

What to do first? by the bulbs or the holder of the bulbs?
There is nothing on internet about the size of the lamp fitting
Is it only screwfitting?- Asked by Samer N
- Mar 23, 2013

Best AnswerYou will need to buy an adaptor that converts the UK standard bayonet fitting to Edison Scrėw. Do bear in mind that the bayonet fitting remains the standard in the UK for safety reasons, and that if you ever want to go back to ordinary bulbs, bayonet style bulbs are by far the easier to obtain here.

Is there a timer function?
Can you set bulbs individually and collectively to turn on and off at a certain time?

Best AnswerI just brought a set today and was having the same problem. The App is very average. Also just looking around you have to turn it on every day apparently.
1. Go into the Philips Hue App
2. On the scenes page tap the + button
3. Select which a photo or light recipe to use
4. Tap on the photo
5. You will then see a timer icon, click this
6. You then have the options to then set the times.
7. See what happens when the time is set....- Answered by Craig A from Washington

Can I use hue in a lamp that is currently controlled by a dimmer switch?
- Asked by Ian G from Toronto
- Mar 30, 2013

AnswerI asked this exact question to Philips customer support and they told me: "We do not recommend to use HUE bulbs with dimmer switches. However if you do want to use them with dimmers please make sure that the dimmers are left on max." They also added that using the bulbs with the dimmer switch set to max would not damage them in any way. Hope this helps
