Best Answer
Yes.
You can use Disk Utility System Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal hard drive or any bootable volume to the Rugged.
It will be able to boot your modern Intel based Mac whether connected via USB 3.0, USB2.0, or Thunderbolt.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

Would my iTunes work if I moved all music/movie files to this harddrive? I'm completely out of space on my Macbook Pro & am looking for alternatives.

Answer
Yes. Follow instructions within iTunes for moving your Library to an external drive.
Of course, you will only be able to listen to your music or podcasts, or view your videos when drive is connected and available.
A better method is to give some consideration to move some of your less frequently needed documents to the external drive.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

can I boot on it?
Can this hold Mountain lion to be booted on??
- Asked by Tom F from Bedford

Answer
Once you install an OS onto it (formatted with GPT partition scheme, and formatted as Mac OS Extended (aka HFS+), you can boot from the Thunderbolt port or the USB 3.0 port.
I have several drives, each with a different version of the OS and different applications.
You can either use the Installer, or clone an existing drive that is already bootable.
Just be sure to not connect both interfaces at the same time. Only one will work at a time.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

If the disk speed is a maximum of 5400pm will there be a real difference in data transfer speed between USB 3.0 and TB?
I'm trying to decide if I really need to go down the Thunderbolt route, as opposed to USB3.0 if the disk speed will be a bottleneck whatever I choose!
I know that USB 3.0 data transfer speed is about 5GB and Thunderbolt 10GB but I have a sneaky suspicion that this academic if the drive is only 5,400 rpm.
Hopefully someone can put me right here!- Asked by Bob M

Answer
I can. I bought the drive and was shocked to only get 110 MB/s, which is faster than my Firewire 800 LaCie Rugged drives, but not by much. Compare that to my Pegasus R6 12TB Thunderbolt set to RAID5 which gets more than 600 MB/s.....I don't know if it is the 5400 rpm thing or not, but this is silly.

What is the Gb storage capacity?
- Asked by Claudia O from Royal Oak

Best Answer
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1024 Gigabytes (GB)
Usually, you won't be able to use the whole 1024 GB because of the device software and such. You can say that you will get approximately 1000 Gigabytes.
I hope this helps. Have a good day.- Answered by Miranda E from Bradford

Does this work for the Snow Leopard Macbook, since it says thunderbolt?

Answer
No. 'display port' is NOT older Thunderbolt.
Thunderbolt is a new interface that happens to also support a display port monitor. You cannot use a Thunderbolt cable on an older Macbook. On that older Mac you can connect a display via the display port connection.
The Thunderbolt connected drive will not work with the older display port connector of the Macbook Pro.
You can however connect to the older Macbook Pro via the USB cable. Though the drive is USB 3.0, it is backward compatible to the USB 2.0 ports on the computer.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

For this drive - 110MB/s with Lacie 1TB Rugged (it's a 5400rpm drive inside). The Lacie SSD versions of this drive do around 350 MB/s
I believe thunderbolt itself goes up to 10Gb/s.- Answered by Steven B from Maylands

can it be connected to an airport extreme?
Can the LaCie 1TB drive be connected to an airport extreme so that it backs up wirelessly? My assumption is that the speed would be USB2. If I do the original backup using Thunderbolt it may not be a problem having a slower backup on an ongoing basis.

No.
This drive is intended to connect to your Macintosh computer via USB or Thunderbolt.
There is no simple way to connect an external drive to your iPad to expand the internal storage.
You could use your iPad to access files from your Macintosh via WiFi. Or you can access from iCloud.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

Is this drive optimised for use with Final Cut Pro?
I have had a Lacie thunderbolt drive before that just stopped rendering. I notice that G Drives have some sort of optimisation with Final cut Pro. Is this the case with this drive? I would like a portable thunderbolt drive for use with this program.

Answer
With thunderbolt connection, drive is as fast as an internal HDD. This is a very fast drive.
For even faster performance there is the SSD version.
Nothing really to optimize. Works fine with FCP and FCP X as long as it is formatted as Mac OS Extended. Don't use MS-DOS/PC format. That's really the only optimization.
Also, only desktop G-drives have Thunderbolt connection; no portable solutions.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

Best Answer
No.
Single port for Thunderbolt, and single port for USB 3.0.
Can only connect to one interface at a time.
If connected to Thunderbolt, cannot use USB 3.0 port.
If connected to USB 3.0 port, cannot use Thunderbolt.
I'm using to shuttle large media files between different computers. Much faster than using a network connection.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton

Is this time machine ready? Also what is the difference between this one and the "SSD" version?
- Asked by Peter D
- Oct 26, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
"Time Machine Ready" simply means that the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended and connects to your computer's FireWire, USB, or Thunderbolt port.
Since this drive can connect via USB3, USB2, or Thunderbolt, and is formatted for the Mac, then yes, it is Time Machine Ready.
This version of the drive uses a hard disk drive and will be slower than the SSD version of the drive.- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton
