Does the sound come from the iPad or from the keyboard itself? Can I add other speakers for more/better sound?

The sound comes from the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, and yes, external speakers work (and can sound great).

It works with any Mac program that uses Core MIDI for MIDI input, including ProTools.

Not from the keyboard this is just a controller which means it won't make any sounds until it is plugged into either a mac, iPad or iPhone or any other such device.
The output from your device is then plugged into your amp and away you go.
This is a great little controller for iPad or iPhone as it has a plug designed just for this as it will draw power from your device but not drain it too much.
Try Garagband, Nlog pro, Animoog apps etc for a portable synth with pitch bend and mod wheel.- Answered by John O from Adelaide

Yes. You just have to connect it to you iOS device like an iPad, or to your Mac, and run a music program that accepts MIDI note input, like GarageBand. Most such programs will give you lots of instrument sounds to play -- not just piano, but also other keyboards like organs and synthesizers, plus guitars and basses, drums and other percussion.
