AnswerI am using the 2TB drive as follows: I divided it into 2 partitions. One (1TB) is for Time Machine. It works flawlessly. The second (1TB) is for storing everything else I need from other computers. Again, no problems.

Can I boot from this and run Mac os X (10.6.8) and TechTool Pro on it to fix my desktop hard drive?
I've followed internet directions on how to install Mac OS X (10.6.8) on the hard drive and then used Carbon Copy Cloner (version 3.4.7) to make bootable backup. When I restart with the option key I do see the partition listed as a bootable drive but when I choose it it goes to the Grey apple screen with the "whirly-timer" and gets stuck in this. Any ideas?

Is this compatible with my Mac if I have Windows OS installed?

Best AnswerYou'll have to reformat the drive using disk utility (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app). You can then choose the drive on the left-side column, click on partitions, and choose 2 if that's what you'll need. Then, you can format one partition HFS+ to use with the Mac, and the other FAT32 or exFat (Only compatible with Vista and above). If you need to access the data of one system in the other, then just choose the format tab instead of partition, and format the single partition exFat or Fat32 depending on your needs as explained above. Fat32 partitions have a maximum file size of 4GB, so if you'll be saving files larger than 4GB, format using exFat, but this will only be compatible with Vista and above.

AnswerYes you can plug this into different Mac computers without issue. If you are asking about using it as a time machine for multiple computers the answer is still yes, but you will have to partition it first so each computer has a dedicated partition for Time Machine to use.

It's 5400RPM. I'm not sure why you want a 7200RPM drive, but the rotational speed will only make a difference if you're going to install an operating system on the drive where you'll have lots of random access happening. If you simply want it for storage, the extra rotational speed won't make a difference. I have this drive and it's perfect, it's very fast for what it is.

How quiet is the drive?
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential (2TB) but it constantly does random access which is annoying when working at quiet times. Hoping this drive is silent.
