Answer
Internet access is required, so you will need to use a 3G-enabled device with a data plan, like an iPhone or iPad, or use a mobile hotspot device to set up a private wifi network.

How is fraud prevented from being performed by this device?
Can anyone sign up for an account? Can anyone, say a waitress, scan my card information into their phone while taking my card to their business' cash register? What kind of information is stored on the devices taking the information?
- Asked by Kimberly B from Cooper City

Answer
There was a brief security issue earlier in the year related to information that was retained on the device, but a later software update fixed the issue. There should be no personally identifiable information on the device after the transaction is complete.
Also, Square monitors accounts for fraudulent activity. There is always a risk of credit card fraud from bad actors, but you may call your issuing bank if you have any questions or concerns related to activity on your account.- Answered by Nathan S from Dallas

Is the owner charged income tax if he uses this for personal transactions (i.e. splitting the tab at dinner with friends)?
I would only use this for personal transactions, such as settling a small debt with friends for things like repaying the cost of movie tickets, etc, and I want to know if the income tax tracking portion of the software will consider those transactions as taxable income?

Answer
I asked Square about it, they told me that for 2011 they are not filing information with IRS regarding income amounts, and they are planning to only really provide information if >$20,000 or 200 transactions are sent through the device. They also mentioned that they would have more details closer to 2012.

We want to give our son an iPad to use when he is deployed to Afganistan with the US NAVE SEABEES this summer. In order to login to his accounts for the Navy, they have to scan their military ID. Is there a card reader he can attach to an iPad that will read an ID card?

Does AT&T (or your cell provider) charge air time or use your data plan to run Square?
- Asked by Rebecca B from Rogers
- Jul 11, 2011

Best Answer
Square requires a live Internet connection in order to authorize payments. Thus, if you are connected via Wifi, your data plan will not be affected, but if you use the phone's data connection, standard data usage will apply. With that said, the amount of data that Square transmits is probably on the scale of sending an email, and shouldn't use much of your data allotment.
