Can one partition the main drive under RAID 1?
I have the 6TB WD Duo with RAID 1. I'd like to partition a 3TB drive but as soon as I partition it with Disk Utility, the hardware senses that there is a difference between the two drives and subsequently rebuilds the partitioned disk into a single 3TB disk.

AnswerHi Erika,
After some trial and error I finally did it. Open Disk Utility. You need to first erase the WD Thunderbolt Raid that is preconfigured. Then you go to the first 3TB WDC and create your partitions and name them. You then go to the second 3TB WDC and create the same size partitions and name them. After that, select the first partition and its RAID tab. I then dragged the two like partitions from each of the drives and named it - creating a RAID 1 drive. Then I did the same for the second partition and so forth. The end result is two (or multiple) drives of same size that are RAID1s.
Hope that helps:)

Can I partition one drive to use 1/2 for time machine and other half for extra storage and then have the first drive mirrored to 2nd drive?
I would like to back up a macbook air with time machine and also have space for non current aperture libraries and large files. So, what I'm thinking I would like to do is partition the first drive allowing half for time machine and then the second half for the aperture libraries etc. and then have that mirror (raid 1) to the second drive. Is this possible or should a different approach be taken. I need to have the aperture libraries backed up and don't want a second drive to plug in.

if we get the 6tb drive assume with dual drives , it really only has 3tb total storage may be a dumb question

AnswerIt can be either, you have the option of RAID 0 which gives 6TB or RAID 1 which gives 3TB and the drives are mirrored so protecting against drive failure. Your choice, safety or speed and capacity. I have gone for capacity as I also have a FW800 6TB drive for backup which is set for RAID 1 to allow for any failure of the Thunderbolt drive (I only have the 4TB thunderbolt) Hope this helps.

Can 2 daisychained drives, each configured in RAID 0 be combined in a RAID 1 array using Disk Utility?

AnswerYou can combine two RAID0 Duo's into a RAID 10 array for redundancy. According to WD, because of the two channel Thunderbolt (not to be confused with two Thunderbolt ports), if you daisy chain two of these in one RAID0 set, you'll see a significant increase in performance. In a single RAID0 Duo, it is writing to both of the internal drives simultaneously, doubling the speed. So if you have two channels, and two Duo's, it makes since that the speed would double again. It is writing to four drives at once, hence 4x the speed -- in theory.

Best AnswerWestern Digital Caviar Green Drives, 5400 RPM (device is passively cooled, no fan so 7200 RPM might get to hot). 220MB/s read and 262MB/s write.

What are the benefits of having two thunberbolt ports? Do you connect the drive with two cables to get faster data transfer?

Best AnswerNo, the two ports are to daisy chain the device out of your laptop to the drive, then the drive to your thunderbolt display. The display has to be at the end of the chain per apples support site I believe.

The My Book Live Dou (6TB) from their site is wireless.
Is the Thunderbolt version you sell on your site wireless?
Also it can be connected by ertnet and accessed from anywhere with the internet.
Does this stand with the version you sell on Apple.

Best AnswerI'm not sure you understand what Thunderbolt is- basically, it's a faster connection than USB or FireWire. It can't be wireless. There is no such thing as a wireless Thunderbolt connection; whatever you've seen on some other site wasn't a wireless Thunderbolt drive.
As this is a Thunderbolt drive, it must be connected to a computer by a Thunderbolt cable- not Ethernet. You're thinking of a NAS drive, like the My Book Live- not the My Book Thunderbolt Duo. Bear in mind the My Book Live would not have the speed advantage this drive has, though.- Answered by Andy F
