is this also an external battery meaning, is this a second backup battery for the ipod or does it just power itself?

Answerif you look at the pictures, you will see it is plugged in via the headphone jack, and not the dock connector, meaning it would be incapable of transferring any power to the battery.

They are a little louder than the built in speaker, but what is most important is that you get a stereo effect like you were wearing headphones. The iPod does not play channels out of its built-in speakers, so there is no distinguishing sounds from left or right, which is a real plus to have when playing games.
