The Companion 20 loudspeakers are fairly loud, certainly loud enough for filling an average size bedroom or small living space. They are not going to rock a house party full of 18 year old kids or annoy the neighbours much but they will provide a strong performance for near-field listening.
The sound quality is the usual hallmark Bose sound, slightly rolled off treble but otherwise a fairly natural tonal balance. Clarity on the Bose Companion 20 is very good surprisingly - despite it's small size. Bass response is probably equal to that of a small bookshelf speaker. It's still less than a dedicated bass module, but offers more than the Companion 2 or Music Monitor models.
They offer a clear, full and rich sound with exceptional clarity although it does lack some definition in the bass, and is slightly rolled off on the treble but this is sometimes why people prefer to go with Bose (they are less artificial sounding in some respects because they don't have honky highs or rumbling lows that seem so commonplace today).
Overall they sound good, will fill a reasonable size room and provide adequate bass for most styles of music, yes they may be a little expensive but you should ultimately let your ears do the deciding. Go listen to them.- Answered by Gareth R

can you use The Bose Companion 20 with my new 27 inch iMac?
Already purchased the Harman Kardon speakers on line from the apple store unboxed them and tried to hook them up only to find they are not compatible. Would have been nice if apple would have indicated that up-front. Now I have waited too long and can no longer return them.
Thanks,

AnswerYes. I had a set hooked up and they worked great. Plug and play. I didn't like the sound quality of the Bose speaker though and purchased a set of Klipsch speakers from best buy to replace them. Gave the Bose speakers to my wife for her computer, iPad and iPod and she loves them. No highs all lows Bose....I listen to a lot of music and play my guitars through my iMac and the sound quality wasn't what I was looking for.

Answer
Yes, although you may be at risk of interference from your phone if it's too close, switching to airplane mode would eliminate this (although would also prevent phone calls etc.) or I use my Bose with an Apple Airport Express which lets me use them wirelessly with my iPhone and Mac, meaning the phone doesn't need to be near the speakers and there's no cables that need to go into my iPhone.

How do these compare to the previous Bose Companion 3?

Best AnswerBOSE seems to tout them as the replacement to the C3s , although you won't get the level of bass that the C3 can produce the sound quality and performance in the C20 is very, very good and arguably slightly better than other BOSE models.

The box contains both the UK adapter and the US adapter. The system will do the entire 100-240V range and convert it itself.

bose companion speakers if so how far can i go from the desk top i mac are they wireless speakers

Best AnswerThe Bose companion speakers have to be connected via a cable, so they are not wireless. Bose does make a wireless speaker called the Soundlink Mobile that connects to any device that has Bluetooth. So iPad, iPhone, iPod, MacBook, iMac, etc....

can I easily override the speakers by plugging in some headphones or do I have to disconnect these and insert headphones into the computer jack
My current speakers are not acoustically high quality, but they have three clever features. 1) An on/off button on one of the speakers, 2) a volume knob for manual control, (ideal for when the phone rings) and 3) a headphone jack beside the volume control. I am looking for Bose quality sound on a computer system set of desktop speakers, but with these three features - especially the headphone jack.

AnswerIt turns out you will find all these features on the Companion 20 as well. The versatile control pod features rotational volume control, single-touch mute, headphone jack and connection for a second audio source. The headphone output is auto sensing and automatically overrides the Companion 20 as long as your headset stays connected.

Is there a power button on the remote or the speakers?
I have the Bose Companion 5 and my main complaint is there is no way to turn it off. The remote can only mute. Is there a power button on the Companion 20?

AnswerThere is no remote that comes with the speakers. There is a power button. It is on the disc which connects to the speaker which also works as the volume control. A pretty cool set up.
