Is there a quality or latency difference between the Jam and the Duet or Duet 2.
I plan on recording guitar with this, but want to get the best quality sound and the least latency. I am using this only with a mac book air, not an ipad or iphone, but want to know if spending the extra money is worth it.

Can I plug apogy jam into a guitar amp for live gigging?

Answer
Yes - Absolutely. I preform on a regular basis using this as a tool. In fact I am doing it right now. You can plug your guitar into the 1/4" on the jam and then plug the 'jam' into your iPad/MacBook. Use aplitube or GarageBand etc... You then need to use a 3.5 mm audio cable that is male on both ends to connect the headphones jack on the iPad/MacBook to your amp. You will need a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter to plug the cable into you amp, just make sure you get a mono adapter - most of the ones you will find at audio stores are all stereo - your amp and most mixing boards for live shows will be mono and if you are using other apps in the background on your iPad it will only pick up one half of the stereo sound. You can 100% use this for live shows, I do it all the time. I also use MainStage, an app for my MacBoook Pro which allows even more in depth pedal settings for live concerts. I specifically bought this to do live shows - It is fantastic! I have never even tried recording with it :)

Is there a risk of damaging my built in sound card or my speakers on my macbook pro when I use this product?
I know to use the gain control to prevent the red lights from showing up. Are there any other things I should be aware of? Should I use headphones only?
In short: I just want to make sure that this input device doesn't provide such a strong signal that it will burnout the sound card.- Asked by Leo S from Pooler

Answer
Your sound card should be fine. As to the speakers just monitor the sound level and you should be fine. After a certain level of volume distortion takes place and could damage the speakers just like in the home or car. I personally prefer headphones because you can really hear what's going on...plus it takes stress off of your comp speakers.
Another thing to consider would be some external computer speakers or even some decent studio monitor speakers designed specifically for home recording. I record music into my mac and never use the built in speakers because they can't handle all of the mhz ranges. Hope this helps!- Answered by Angelo K from Austin

4th Gen iPad & JAM - buy now with 30 pin adapter or wait for native lightning version of JAM?
I've just ordered a 4th gen iPad. From the other answers here I'm assuming this will work fine with JAM as long as I have the lightning to 30-pin adapter, but all the questions I can see here on that are for the iPhone 5 - I'd assume this would be the same for the iPad but would like to check. Alternatively, are Apogee planning to release a native Lightning version of the JAM? If thats coming I can hang on for that...

Answer
Chris A, sorry I ended up deciding to wait for apogee to release a JAM with a native lightning adapter - which they haven't done yet, but apparently they are going to...

I was just asking the same question in the Apple store today. They said it does but you have to buy the $30 adapter because the mini and the newest iPads have the lightning connector.

What makes this interface better than the Line 6 mobile in, iRig, or Guitar Jack?
I bought the new iPad primarily for recording music specifically guitar. What makes this interface better than the Line 6 mobile in, iRig, Guitar Jack Model 2, or the other guitar inputs being sold now? The new iPad will be my first apple device other than the iPhone4s. If anyone has any experience with any of the interfaces I mentioned please explain how they perform on the iPad and the GarageBand app. I am very excited for the Jam session feature on Garageband and want the best IF I can buy.

I can't comment on the Line 6 but I had the iRig and Jam. I returned the iRig.
The Jam has built in analogue to digital converters and they are very good. It changes your analogue guitar signal into digital and then sends it digitally to the phone through the dock connection.
The iRig plugs into the headphone/microphone jack and uses the AD converters in the phone which aren't as good as the Apogee converters. The result was an unacceptable amount of hiss and inferior sound quality.
Hope this helps.- Answered by Steve W from Sydney

Best Answer
I'm using it with an iPad (1) and there is a noticeable latency... Don't know if this is inherent in the hardware or if it would be better on and iPad 2.

Will the Apogee jam work with iphone 5 and a 30 pin dock convertor ?
I know that the new iphone 5 comes with a much smaller "Lightning" connector. I am wondering if I can upgrade from iphone 4 (where the apogee jam works flawlessly) to iphone 5, get a 30 pin dock connector and be able to use garageband as before.

Yes - this works- I have the adapter and it works just fine. There seems to be a bit of a bug in that you should plug in the output into the audio jack first then plug in the adapter then plug in the Jam.
That should get you going in any app.
Other thing is that I got the extended adapter and I can see that if you only got the smaller non-extended adapter then you may ruin access to the headphone jack.
Not sure about that.

Will this work with a mic for recording vocals?
- Asked by Jennifer S from Brooklyn
- Mar 11, 2011

Best Answer
Could be wrong but I don't think this interface is intended for vocals/mics.
Generally mics use a different connector and require additional power/preamp'ing to work.
Apogee IS coming out with something (a mic) called MIKE that is intended to direct plug into the iPad, with typical Apogee sound/transfer quality.
I'm planning on getting both and eventually the Symphony I/O mmmmm.- Answered by Ross T from Eliot

Best Answer
Definitely yes to bass guitar, vocals would be better with the upcoming 'MIC' from Apogee. You could also use the inbuilt mic in the iPad to get vocal ideas into Garageband.

I checked with the Apogee web site and it confirms that it is compatible with the 3rd generation iPad. To be sure I entered into a live chat with an Apogee rep online who confimed this - but they couldn't explain why Apple's Store info is not up to date.

Will the Apogee JAM device allow me to plug in my tenor ukulele and get the correct sound and note arrangement?
- Asked by Grey F from Bainbridge Island
- Mar 13, 2011

Best Answer
The Jam requires an instrument-level input like what you would get with an electric guitar. If your uke has that, or a pickup that delivers that, into a 1/4" jack, then yes you will be able to plug it in.
As for sound and note arrangement, this is an analog-to-digital convertor, not a pitch tracking device like a guitar synth - so it'll put out whatever you put into it. Hope that helps!- Answered by Dennis K from Portland
