Does the SCR3500 Smart Card Reader only allow you to sign in with your CAC to sites like AKO and DTS or does it also allow you to digitally sign forms
I want to be able to sign into CAC enabled sites such as AKO and DTS but also sign forms once I am in there such as travel vouchers and NCOERS. Does anyone have experience with this and can vouch that this card reader has this capability?

Best AnswerThis is just the hardware device (smart card reader) like you would purchase other readers to access your CAC on any platform. This device allows the physical card to be accessed by software running on the computer via the USB port. This reader is CCID compliant and can be used on any platform.
Any software (Native in the OS -OR- from third-party providers) would be required to use the certificates & private keys on the card to perform tasks such as signing forms as you asked. You have several options available to you both from Open Source and Commercial resources.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax

Best Answer
Yes. This is a standard CCID compliant reader. You will need to have/install the desired Smart Card software to support your smart card. Previously, Mac OS X thru v10.6 shipped with support for several US Government, Belgian, and Japanese Smart Cards. OS X Lion still ships with all of the backend of Smart Card Services in tact, but no longer includes the individual Tokend modules for any smart cards.
You would need to acquire an appropriate Tokend installer from either the SmartCardServices project at MacOSForge.org (supporting the previously installed Tokend modules) or purchase a solution from one of the commercial providers. Your support and card profile needs will help to determine what route you should take.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax

Does this thing work automatically or do I still need to do some programming to get my DOD CAC card to work?

Best AnswerThis is a CCID Compliant Reader which works automatically with the built-in Smart Card CCID Class Reader Driver if that is what you are asking. No programming has ever been needed for use of Smart Cards on Mac OS X (by end users), so am not sure of your reference. Other platforms have CCID Class Reader drivers, so the reader will work with them as well.
The one requirement on Mac OS X is that you have a corresponding Tokend installed for your card(s) in use. The original CAC has been supported since 10.2.3 with some of the new CACNG (2 Applets: CACv2 & PIV). Pre-installed with Mac OS X are tokend support for: BELPIC, CAC, JPKI, and PIV.
The CACNG support for Mac OS X 10.5 & 10.6 began with the release of the beta Tokend from the Apple managed Open Source Project at SmartCardServices.MacOSForge.Org. They also host User/Dev mailing lists for assistance which might be of help to you and others.
Summarizing: This reader is fully compatible and just works, but keep in mind that is one part of the equation. If you have a newly issued CAC (i.e. CACNG) then you would need to grab the beta Tokend from MacOSForge as noted above.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax

Does the SCM SCR3500 Smart Card Reader work with an iPad 2 or is there any smart card reading capability for the iPad 2?
- Asked by Kira C from Apo

Best AnswerNo and Yes. As of iOS 4.x, there are no Smart Card Services provided by Apple running with which to communicate with a Smart Card Reader (External Accessory) of any type. There are iOS developers currently working with partners in providing integration for specific Smart Card Readers directly into their product largely using their own Bluetooth adaptor to provide the needed BT Serial Profile as well.
There is no USB port on the iPad/iPad2, so you would also need an approved 30-pin External Accessory to support attaching this to the iPad/iPad 2. Then you would need the integration within the Application.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax

If you have the USB attachment for the iPad 2 the reader will work?

AnswerNo, unfortunately it will not work, as there are specific device related drivers and depending on what you are attempting to access, some software that might have to be installed in order for the reader to work. As such, it is limited to standard desktop operating systems for the time being.

Can the SCR3310 read XD photo cards and show them on the I-Mac?

AnswerNo. This device is for a "Smart Card" similar in form factor to your Bank Card or Credit Card, but with a hardware "chip" exposed on one side. Smart Cards are used for various User Authentication scenarios like login on a computer, digitally signing/decrypting email messages and accessing PK-enabled websites.
You are looking for a "Media Reader" for accessing your photos on an XD photo card.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax

AnswerThis device is a hardware interface between a plastic card form factor of a Smart Card and a USB port on a computer. It has no capabilities in and of its own. You are looking for software tools to run to perform those tasks - this would not provide that for you.

Best AnswerCard is inserted into the long flat edge of the expanded "T" - parallel to the keyboard. On a MacBook / MacBookPro it is possible to also have other cables inserted into the adjoining USB port - I do it all the time. The reader will of course fit in any USB port on any system and is automatically detected and supported by Mac OS X 10.5 & 10.6. It is especially handy for those who do not want to carry around readers with long cables.

Can this card be used for business (for customers), i.e. a paypal account on the computer
We would like to use the smart card reader on either our imac or the ipad when we are selling our products at a show. Is the reader compatible to use when accepting payments through our business paypal account?

AnswerThis is a CCID Smart Card Reader - Hardware. Your Mac OS X application would need to know how to handle the security objects on the card (i.e. X.509 Identity). Any Mac OS X Application would be able to see and use it like any other Keychain using the Keychain APIs.
As of v4.2, iOS does not provide any Smart Card Services with which to provide system-wide support for a Smart Card or Smart Card Reader. Your iOS Application would need to support both the hardware and the objects on the cards you would have in use. And of course, you would also need some 30-PIN to USB adaptor for an iPAD as well, but that is the least of your worries right now.- Answered by Shawn G from Fairfax
