Best AnswerIt is a transmitter that takes the audio output from the ipod and transmits it over the FM band over unused airspace. Any receiver capable of detecting the frequency used will pick up the music from the ipod as long as they are close enough to get a good signal.

I have a griffin itrip now it's probably about 6 or 7 years old can they get worn out to the point for replacement
I have a ipod nano.16GB 5 TH G and a ipod classic 30 GB
5 TH G. I have been noticing that the griffin itrip is not working like it use to I was wondering if it is just old and time for a new one? There is a lot of static and I have to almost put the speakers up all the way to her anything. I never had to do that befor. You can also seewhere the wires are showing.
