While the movies do have to be associated with an iTunes account, the movie files do not need to be on the same drive as the iTunes account. If you deselect "Copy movies to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" located in Advanced in iTunes preferences before you add the movies to the library, the files will remain on the external drive and will not be added to the drive that runs iTunes. AppleTV will be able to play those movies through the iTunes account.

  • Airport Express as an extender.

If you have an Airport Extreme setup and you want to use the Airport Express in repeater mode, does the Airport Express have to be hard wired or can it pick up the wireless from the Airport Extreme?

    Best Answer

Yes, an 802.11n AirPort Express will wirelessly "extend" the wireless network of an 802.11n AirPort Extreme. First, open AirPort Utility, select the Extreme and the "Wireless" panel, check the box "Allow this network to be extended," then Update.

To then setup the Express, plug it in near the Extreme, connect the two with Ethernet cable and again open AirPort Utility, having run software update prior to doing so. After completing setup of the Express, disconnect it and plug it in to an electric receptacle at its intended location.

  • Best Answer

The Express is plugged into an electrical socket. The Extreme can be mounted on a wall or ceiling. That makes a big difference as to how your Macs can receive the signal. Where they are located makes a big difference in range.

Apple keeps improving the antenna layout on both so one would expect similar signal strength on both. But given that the Extreme has separate receivers and transmitters for B/G and N, it should always do better. The problem being, the Extreme will downshift to the lowest common denominator.. so if you have anyone connecting with a B or G card, that is what it will go to, unless you set it to only accept N. The Extreme can handle both independently. I have an older Extreme that I run only in N, and a second AP running G/B to emulate what it can do.

The newest version of Extreme has even better antenna positioning, which makes for an even better reception. It is the premier Access Point out there right now.

    I'd go with an Extreme.

  • Can I use the Airport Extreme as a Repeater or an Network Extender?

I work in a yard where my iPhone and HP laptop can see a wireless signal but I'm so far away I cannot connect to the signal to use it. Can I use the Airport Extreme like the Express as a repeater? I don't know if it matters but the internet signal does require a user name and password in order to be used. I'm assuming that since the extreme cost more it could potentially work with a greater range, or is it about the same?

    Best Answer

Yes, you can use the Airport Extreme as a repeater or a network Extender. When you're setting it up with the Airport utility software, simply put it into repeater mode. The Airport Extreme has a range of at least 250 meters, which is about 820 feet, which is pretty impressive!

  • Will the iPad only print to a wireless printer, or will it print to a printer connected to the Airport Express through a USB connection?

Pages app on my iPad will print to a wireless printer, but I don't have a wireless printer. I need to update my wireless router to an Airport Express and did not want to get a new printer too. I am hoping that I can print from my iPad to the printer connected to the airport Express. Currently I cannot print to the printer connected to my iMac unless I use another 3rd party app and I cannot directly print from Pages (or Numbers)

    Best Answer

Any Windows or Mac *computer* on your network should be able to print to any USB printer that is connected to an Airport Extreme (or Airport Express or Time Capsule).

The "AirPrint" feature in iOS 4.2 (for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) works only with AirPrint-enabled printers, of which there are currently only a few (all from HP). iOS devices can't currently print to a generic network-attached printer in the way that PCs and Macs long have.

Apple is reportedly working on iOS enhancements that will allow iOS devices to print to any network-attached printer, but the timeframe for delivery has not been announced. There are some third-party apps that claim to provide similar functionality.

Yes. Up to 25% better, plus the most important factor is the addition of MIMO technology which allows different speed clients to connect at their own speeds without slowing down the entire network. This would likely solve your problem while still allowing slower speed devices. However, an Extreme still only serves up to 50 clients.

The speed of the wireless network of your A1143 could not have slowed when serving only a single client. Wireless routers only provide slower service due to increased interference, greater demand from serving multiple clients, and/or when purposely accommodating a slower speed client.

When slower speed clients are allowed to connect to a faster speed network, all non-MIMO wireless routers that have multiple speed networking capability automatically slow down to the speed of the slowest client.

You can prevent this from happening by controlling access to your network, or by increasing the minimum speed requirement for wireless clients by changing the "Radio Mode" setting in AirPort Utility.

The A1143 has eight different Radio Mode settings to choose from - if not all are visible, press and hold the "option" (alt) key prior to clicking the Radio Mode popup.

  • What AT&T DSL modem works best with the AirPort Extreme?

I just bought an AE and would like to know what AT&T FastAccess DSL Direct 6.0 modem works best with it. I have a 327W Westell wireless routher/modem hooked up right now so I am assuming I will need to purchase a separate DSL modem to make the AE work. What are some of the best DSL modems on the market?

    Best Answer

Got better performance by trashing the AT&T provided 2Wires at two locations this past year and replacing them with the Actiontec (Model GT701D) 1-Port Broadband DSL Modem with Built-In Firewall. Both connected easily to the AT&T service. No issue since then at either location. Third location still uses an AT&T provided Siemens 4100 in its sixth year (said to have a six year lifespan). Will switch to another Actiontec (off the shelf at Best Buy) when needed.

My guess is that most modems are much the same. Simply stick to a DSL modem, not a modem/router, and avoid any and all USB modems.

  • does the airport extreme support wifi protected setup? the reviews i read say no, the wifi certification doesn't say, but the airport ap seems to

wifi protected setup can pair base stations and clients without the need of typing
the passphrase, the passphrase is sent to the client automatically based on authentication methods such as a push button, a pin number, or near field methods.

reviews of the airport extreme say that the unit does not support wifi protecfted setup
and the wiif alliance does not list it has having the feature

but the air port utility app seems to be able to negotiate wifi protected setup.

This is not the 5th generation AirPort Extreme, rather it's about the 7th. But, this IS the 5th generation AirPort Extreme 802.11n Base Station. Its model number is A1408 and its part number is MD031--/-. It is better than the 4th generation because it is priced at the exact same price while offering an improved antenna along with higher speed and greater range.

  • Best Answer

No it is not. It is only a wireless router with 3 additional ethernet ports out the back.

  • What is the range of the airport express?

I have a wireles router on the main floor and my macbook will be on that floor as well. I want use to use the airport express with my home stereo equipment located in the basement. WIll this work?

    Best Answer

This will probably work fine, depending on the materials your floor and walls are made from. As wireless reception is such a delicate and house specific experience, it's best to experiment and find out what works for you. If you have any issues, you can return the Airport Express for a full refund within 14 days, however as I said, I don't expect you would have any trouble at all. :)

  • Best Answer

To clarify, you can still have the airport extreme to handle your base station functions and also have the express hooked up to your stereo for streaming. I have three express routers hooked up to three different stereo's throughout the house and outside and can play all three at the same time from Itunes or from pandora ( and other streaming services ) using Airfoil.

  • Best Answer

Yes, to buy older versions of any Apple product you must look at the "Special Deals" section.

  • Best Answer

No, there is no provision for connecting an external antenna. You might need a base station in each room. The base station can be positioned on a wall or ceiling, and need not be level.

The following recommendations can help an AirPort Extreme achieve maximum wireless range and optimal network coverage:

Place the AirPort Extreme in an open area where there are few obstructions, such as large pieces of furniture or walls. Try to place it away from metallic surfaces.

If you place the AirPort Extreme behind furniture, keep at least an inch of space between the AirPort Extreme and the edge of the furniture.

Avoid placing the AirPort Extreme in areas surrounded by metal surfaces on
    three or more sides.

If you place the AirPort Extreme in an entertainment center with stereo
equipment, avoid completely surrounding the AirPort Extreme with audio, video, or power cables. Place the AirPort Extreme so that the cables are to one side. Maintain as much space as possible between the AirPort Extreme and the cables.

Try to place the AirPort Extreme at least 25 feet (7.6 meters) from a microwave oven, 2.4 or 5 gigahertz (GHz) cordless phones, or other sources of interference.

  • Can the Airport Extreme function as a DLNA server for content stored on a USB HDD connected to the airport extreme?

I want to stream my music and video collection to my DLNA enabled HDTV. I want to do this without a computer being involved. Does the Airport Extreme act the DLNA server for content that is connected to it via the USB port?

    Answer

I haven't been able to do this without having a computer on.

  • External Hard drive attached to AirPort Extreme Base Station questions ?

    Hi,

    A few questions below

    1) What is the file system that the External Hard drives mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station uses ?

Is it HFS ? I need network attched storage for HFS format to store iphoto libraries across computers without have both turned on . I have NAS support now for NTFS and EXT3 but iphoto does not work on those partition types very well.

    2) If I set up the hard drive mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to have multiple partitions will all of those portions be seen by my MAC computers? I.e if I set up a partition for time machine of a macbook, a partition for a time machine of a mac mini, and then a third for data sharing will all be mounted and seen by the macs.

    3) Can you rsync a hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to another hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station if using a external hub . . I.e create a backup copy of the HFS drive .

    Best Answer

    1. Yes, it supports NTFS.

    2. Officially, you cannot use a multi-partition HD as an AirDisk. It may work, and each be seen by multiple Macs.

Using Time Machine with an Airport is NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED by Apple.

It works well for some, not so well for some, and not at all for others.

This forum will not let me post a link to the Apple Technical article, but here's how to find it:

Go to apple.com (slash) support (slash) snowleopard. Select Time Machine, then Other Time Machine articles, then the one titled "Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Extreme AirPort Disks."

If you have a problem with this configuration and call AppleCare, you'll get little help, if any.

It can at a file server. So, on each computer - when you start iTunes, choose to start with option and select a library - and choose the file from the common shared folder.

Notice, this is different from a shared iTunes library using iTunes. A shared iTunes library needs a server serving iTunes.

Best option is to put your media file in TimeCapsule, Run any one iTunes and make it use the shared file from TimeCapsule as the library. Then publish the iTunes library. Now, all iTunes media player in your network will see the shared iTunes library.

TimeCapsule is a shared network storage. TimeCapsule is not an iTunes server.

  • How do I mirror my Mac Book Pro through the new Apple TV to display on my HD television?

I recently purchased the new Apple TV and using my Linksys router, I am able to mirror my iPhone and iPad on my HD television. However, I have not been able to mirror my Mac Book which is also part on my Linksys network. Will an Airport Extreme Base Station solve this issue?

    Best Answer

No, an extreme base station will NOT solve this issue. You cannot mirror OSX to Apple TV 2 UNLESS you purchase a software application called 'AirParrot' google it to find out more.

Actually you are spot on. That is the whole purpose really of AirPort. As you say, plug in your ethernet cable and the AirPort Extreme Base Station, set it up and it becomes your wireless access point for your home, office or wherever you will be using it. It will allow any computer, Mac or PC to wirelessly connect to the internet provided, of course that you have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and it also has dual Band Wi-Fi so any Wi-Fi device will also use it to connect like an iPod Touch or iPhone.

You can also plug a USB printer into it so that any computer on your network can print wirelessly as well. You can even plug in a USB hard Drive into the base station for use as a network drive which can also be accessed over the web if you are away. If you own a PS3 or XBOX the base station will also allow you to connect those devices wirelessly to your network.
