Which one is better? Macbook pro or Macbook Air

As a designer, I assume you'll be using some fairly heavy graphical programs. The MacBook Air is great for portability, but it really isn't the best for heavier work. The Pro is really your best option, as it can handle the demand (particularly the 15 or 17 inch models with their graphics cards).

Mac book pro or Mac book air?
I am entering high school and I am having the most difficult time deciding what Mac I should get. I want to get the one that is right for me. The Mac book air is significantly lighter which is convenient when I am taking my computer to school but the pro has more memory, a DVD slot and in my opinion is better looking. From the beginning I have wanted the pro but I have been talked out of it many times and I have asked many people what one I should get and most people say the air for it's portability and weight but only one person recommended the pro. So right now I am leaning towards the pro because I have liked it from the beginning but I just wanted to get some more opinions before I made my final decision.

If you have not already made your purchase, then my quick thoughts.
It depends on what you plan to do at school, and to be honest, what you plan to do after. Because of the durability of laptops, think of what you need for a while.
If you need to complete assignments, (using word processor, spreadsheets, presentations etc, then either will do. If you plan to do graphics/ photo's/ videos/ games, then the pro is definitely the way to go. I have used an 11" air for over a year, and it seems to handle photo editing and graphics quite well (as long as I do not use many layers) but anything more heavy duty, it struggles a little. For games, only the light-weight games in iTunes run very well. Some of the more flashier games also struggle.
The long term issue is the one I think dictates your choice. If you plan to do more with your laptop in the future, then a pro is the better choice. The portability of the Air is the killer reason I stayed with it.- Answered by Andy P

Will the new 13" MBP Retina be enough for professional video editing?
I currently edit on a 15" MBP 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo. 8GB of RAM and 500 GB 7,200RPM drive, plus 4Tb external drives. It has been working well for 1080P Apple Pro Res44 in FCP. But a little slow rendering and struggles opening 10-12 webpages at once.
I'm looking for a portable replacement and the 13" Retina is attractive for long airplane/car trips.
This is what worries me:
1. Non-expandable RAM limited to 8GB (does the SSD make up for this?)
2. SSD only 500GB (728 is too expensive) (could use external drive for the road I guess)
3. Will it be that much faster?
Are these issues worth worrying about and is it worth it to upgrade at this point>?- Asked by Jacob P from San Francisco

I would personally go with the 13" MBP without the retina display. The CPU appears to be identical and the 2.9GHz i7 is standard on the higher end one in addition to a 750GB hard drive, an optical drive, and expandability. There's no discrete GPU in either 13" model so you may want to consider the 15" as the quad core processor and discrete GPU would both speed up rendering considerably. I do however understand the desire for portability and personally have a 2.9GHz i7 13" MBP which for me has been fantastic. I haven't noticed any slowdown on it no matter what I throw at it and I've been genuinely impressed with the performance of the Intel HD 4000 graphics. I'm not sure how big of an impact the reduction in size and weight on the Retina MBP will have but I've found mine to be extremely portable. Overall though unless you really need the retina display I don't know that the new MBP really brings anything significant to the table, especially considering the tradeoffs and the cost.

No, not really, if you only use it for office works and simple photo editing, then the normal MacBook Pro is more than enough.

Do the refurbished macs have turbo boost?
I'm looking at a refurbed July '11 MBA and it does not mention the "turbo boost" but has the same dual core i5 processor as the new ones.
If the refurb doesn't have it, is it worth buying the new ones?- Asked by Justin S from Seattle

Answer
Depends on the Refurbished macs for example this mac book air says:
Processor 1.7 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz)
and it was under the Refurbished area, so yes some do.- Answered by Craig S from Neenah

Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro 15"
I am a high school student and I plan on buying a Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro 15". I'm fine in terms of budget. Purpose of having this Macbook is for Photoshop means, video editing means, gaming means and most especially as a requirement for each student in our school, our thesis / research. I love downloading musics and movies and I use social networks and emails a lot. So I would like to be sure before I would buy a Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro 15". And I also love going around town and cities along my laptop with me. Cause even in restaurants or coffee shops I do my schoolwork. So which is better for me as a student? Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro 15"?

Answer
The MacBook Air is super portable, so you can take it almost anywhere. But, it doesn't come with as much storage as the MacBook Pro 15", so it couldn't hold as many apps and files as the Pro.
The MacBook Pro 15" has high-speed graphics, good for playing games. But, it is bigger than the MacBook Air 13", so not as much portability. If you can deal with slower graphics, and only 256 GB of storage, go with the MacBook Air 13". If not, I'd reccomend the MacBook Pro 15".- Answered by Joshua S from Denver

iMac vs. Mac Pro for video editing
I'm ready to replace an aging Mac G5 and upgrade to Final Cut Pro X. Should I go with a new iMac or a Mac Pro? How much memory, processing power, hard drive space, etc., should I add for best results (but without exceeding my $4,000 total budget?)

The Mac Pro is not a High End desktop, it is a workstation. It is meant for companies to but 10 of them for Music Production, (ect). The 27 inch IMac does a great job with video editing. Dont spend to much money on harddrive space cause you can always buy a external dive when needed. I Do recommend that you upgrade your IMac to a Intel Core i7 processor, also at least 8 Gb of ram.

Which Mac book Pro is best for use in a home studio or a professional studio?
I started looking at macbook pros a while ago. eventually, I started wondering which one would be best for me. I'll be getting one for the same reasons any person would get one: things like storing photos, videos, music, word and powerpoint documents and other things; however, most of what I'd do with one is writing and recording music with software like Logic Pro or Pro Tools. review sites and recommendations from friends have told me that the base line 13 inch would be fine. but, I've also told my friends that I'd like to write video tracks to go with my projects in, for example, Logic Pro. when that comes up, nobody seems to know. Now, I wonder if one of the 15 inch models is preferred for that, or if there's even a noticeable difference between the two computers. any ideas?

rMBP or MBA? Need Help
Okay I will be buying a Mac soon, this will be the first Mac I buy but I am a very experienced PC user and I currently study Computing and physics etc at College. I am torn between:
Option 1: Mac Book Pro 15 inch with Retina base model
or
Option2 : Fully upgraded 13 inch Mac Book Air + Printer + Apple TV + Superdrive
both options work out to be about the same amount of money, I do a fair amount of web site design, so Photoshop, along with interest in using XCode, Logic Pro will also be a possibility in the future and not much gaming as I have a console, but I do play WoW and D3 occasionaly, So will the MacBook Air be capable of doing all of this, as I would like to save some money to buy the other things I listed, or will I need to buy a Mac Book Pro? Thanks :)- Asked by Ben P

Should I get macbook pro 15 or macbook pro 15 with retina?
Im looking into buying a mac for university in the fall and wasnt sure f i should get the 15 inich pro or 15 inch pro with retina? I am looking at the top pro with 2.6ghz and 750gb and the pro with retina with 2.3ghz and the flash storage of 256 gb. they are the same price so thats not the issue i need to know if getting retina display(and all the new features/design) is worth losing the gb and ghz?

I would recommend the Retina. Since i think that Apple will eventually kill of the regular 15 Pro. The Retina is thinner, More power, better features. I dont think that since most of peoples time on computers is online, you wont be using 750 GB, 256 GB is good enough. You could always but a external drive.

13" MacBook Air or 13" MacBook Pro?
I'm about to buy my first MacBook and need some help, I was waiting for the 13" rMBP but its way too expensive so I've decided to go with the 13" Air or Pro. I'm leaning towards the Air because of its looks and portability.
As I know very little about specifications I was wondering if someone could help me answer a few question;
Is 128gb flash storage enough in the air?
Is the 1.8GHz i5 quick?
Will I need an optical drive or can everything be downloaded now?
Is 4GB of ram enough?
Basically, I want the air but only if it is going to be quick while; web browsing, streaming, downloading, using word and excel (or apples equivalent) and gaming
Thanks for any help- Asked by David E

I have had a MacBook Air for almost 2 years now and find it quite good for all of the functions (except gaming, which I don't do) that you mention. I previously had a 15" MacBook Pro and found it too heavy to bother taking anywhere. Now I travel with the Air daily.
Streaming YouTube, downloading iTunes songs, etc, is fine and the only bother I have with upload or download speeds is trying to sync large media files with Dropbox: it can be frustratingly slow (but I am talking Gigabytes of files...). I rip DVDs to the Air and keep quite a few on that 128 gb drive, plus a healthy iTunes library, but otherwise store documents and photos in Dropbox and iCloud (meaning you don't necessarily have to have a huge internal hard drive...
I don't do gaming on the Air and if I were a gamer, I'd probably recommend the MacBook with the faster processor, more RAM and I'd put an SSD in it rather than a mechanical hard drive. The Air, I think, is all about mobility and productivity, with a bit of entertainment on the side.- Answered by Michael C from Edmonton

Would MacBook Pro or MacBook Air be best for high school?
I'm a 9th grader right now. My parents decided to reward me for getting 2nd place in the National Middle School debate tournament. In high school, chances are I'm probably still going to be on the debate team, so i'm going to need a computer that can do word processing, relatively fast internet (for research), and chances are I'm probably going to have a million tabs open at once so i can get stuff from different sources. Weight shouldn't be too much of a problem. as long as it isn't too heavy (like 5.5 lb+). Battery life could be an issue, because there's no grantee that the room I'm debating in will have a outlet to plug into. So would the MacBook Pro, or the MacBook Air be more suitable?

If I was you, I would go for the MacBook Pro. It's got more battery life in it, more storage so you can do more stuff, it's really fast and it has good connectivity but if you are going to use an Ethernet port for the Internet, you'll need an adapter for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display but the normal generation of MacBook Pro has an Ethernet port. It also depends how much you want to spend. Good Luck.

Should I get a macbook air when I already have a macbook pro and an ipad 2?
I have a 4-year-old 15-inch MacBook Pro which still works perfectly, except for some operating system issues, but is very heavy. It is a bit of an effort to carry into work at times. I also have an ipad 2, although this is mainly used for emails sometimes and social networking and games.
I am considering getting an 11-inch macbook air and using the pro as more of a desktop. I use mainly word, pointpoint and the internet on my pro.
Do you think there would be benefits of getting an air? or is it a waste of money?- I have been told the screen isn't that great- but as my pro is so old I may not notice this!- Asked by Tara B

What is a faster machine? the new MacBook Pro with retina. Or the Macbook Pro with Ivy bridge
I am wondering what will be a better macbook for running video editing software and possibly some gaming. The MacBook with Ivy Bridge or the New Macbook with Retina display. I know the Retina will look better but will it run better then the Ivy Bridge?
- Asked by Landon J from Bismarck

Best Answer
The MacBook Pro with Retina Display should be faster. All MacBook Pros carry the Ivy Bridge processors but the MacBook Pro with Retina Display has solid state flash storage so it will be faster than the other MacBook Pros with hard drives. The Retina Display MacBook also has 8GB of RAM which is more than the other MacBook Pros.
I'd go with the Retina Display one, it has great specs and also looks great. Should be great for video editing and gaming.
