Best AnswerNo, the new iMacs do not include a CD/DVD drive. Apple sells an external drive (USB Superdrive) for $80.

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro with retina display
I am going into high school next year, and I know I'll need a new laptop, but I'm debating between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro with Retina display 13in. I would upgrade the processor on both models, and the RAM on the air. I don't know how much faster the MacBook Pro with retina would be though. I program in X-code (cocoa), would run Boot Camp, Use FCPX, and Logic Pro 9 as well as other basic programs for school. I know I can't afford the 15in MacBooks which are much faster, so I don't know if there would be much difference between the two. Thanks in advanced!

i want to buy the old macbook air, not the one that just came out, but I can't find it. is it still for sale here? where should I look for one?
I know the new laptops came out recently, but I was going to buy the now older one. Can I still buy it here online, or do they only sell their newest products here? Also, are the prices cheaper for the older laptop now that the new one has come out?

Should I get a Retina 13" or an Upgraded 13" Pro?
I'm contemplating between buying the Upgraded 13" Pro, for $1,399, which actually dropped in price to $1,299, or the base 13" Pro with Retina Display for $1,399. I am an Advertising major, but am not heavy on design. I would be looking into doing some photo editing. The only thing that bothers me on the Retina is 1) I would be giving up loads of space since I can only really afford the 128GB SSD and 2) I would have an i5, and not an i7, which I would have with the Upgraded 13" Pro. Is it gaining the SSD worth losing the i7 and all the hard drive space?

what are the differences between solid state drive and flash storage?
- Asked by LetÃcia U from Montreal
- Apr 5, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerA Solid State Drive (SSD) is a storage device that uses flash technology but comes in the form factor of a conventional hard drive so it can be used in a computer in the hard drives role.
The term 'flash storage' refers to the use of any memory based on a micro chip with no moving parts. E.g. USB flash drive, memory card...
Apple describe their latest machines as having flash storage as they use flash chips soldered to the board. In practice, this is like an SSD but as it can't be removed and is in a different form factor.- Answered by Shane B

Which one is better for me? MacBook Pro or MacBook Air?
I will be studying a Masters in Spanish next year. The program is 2 months in the states, 9 months in Spain, and 2 months in Argentina. I'm debating between the Pro and Air. I have hesitations about the Air not having a CDROM drive, although I know if need be I can purchase an external. I would be transporting the MacBook frequently and was wondering if the 1.5lb weight difference would be significant. Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with the Pro or Air and international travel. Thanks!

Best AnswerIt really depends. The only perks to the pro is th CD drive. Remember, With the Air you can download apps or anything else you need, no problem. If you are using it for things like music, video editing, photo editing, or things of that sort, go Pro. But if you're really just writing papers, doing presentations, emails, get the Air. In my opinion based on what you have said, I would go with the Air. Make sure to get Apple Care protection since you will be traveling and you never know what could happen to it.
I in the same position you are, and I'm gonna be getting the Air. There are USB ports if I really need extra storage, and can download anyhing I need from the App Store, or other forms of downloading.- Answered by Andrew B

Macbook Pro 13 inch or Macbook Air 13 inch
I want a Macbook but I don't know which one to get. On my Mac I want to
Surf the web
E-mail poeple
Use all the office documents(e.g. word, powerpoint, excel)
Store all my songs photos etc on it
Watch some movies on it but not that many
I also want the lastest software on it like OS X Mountain Lion on it and the upgrades to that.
I won't play many games on it so I am not worried about graphics.
So as you can see i want to do the basics.
I would prefer the Macbook Air but i was wondering if it would have enough space on it, would it? I would aslo like it to quite portable but that is not a big concern.
What Laptop would you recommend?- Asked by Thomas L

Best AnswerI've had everything Mac has to offer. My uses are about like yours, with the addition of using a dictation/transcription program. I also do some streaming of movies & such. While I have a big desktop iMac, a couple of 15 inch Macbooks and a couple of iPads, I find I use the 13 inch Air much more than any of the others.
It's the ultimate in portability (just as good as an iPad), unobtrusive on my desk at work (where the Microsoft darkside holds sway), and the external CD drive works great. It's by no means necessary with all the developers who let you download their software directly, but I just like having the CD/DVD option.
Anyway, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you spring for the Air. I haven't been.- Answered by Kay J from Port Orchard

Which is right for me? 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display or Maxed-Out 13-inch MacBook Air
I need to get a laptop that I will have with me almost all the time. So far, I've narrowed it down to the base 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display with 512GB Flash Storage or the high-end 13-inch MacBook Air with 2.0GHz i7 [Turbo to 3.2GHz], 8GB RAM, 512GB of storage. They're close [other than the processor, I'm not sure which will perform better] in specs when it comes to RAM, Storage, etc. I really want this to be a computer that will last a long time. I keep thinking about the air because of its weight but the Retina always lures me in with the extra ports [like the HDMI, awesome!] and I like its design a bit more. I'm going to be doing a little bit of everything with it but I have an external SuperDrive so I'm not worried about CDs. Thanks for any help!

Best AnswerMy two bits ... the 13 inch Air might be physically lighter, but in reality takes up more real estate with its larger footprint and has a greater apparent heft because of leverage effect. The larger footprint of the Air was seen as a potential inconvenience when traveling by plane.
Processor performance were seemed similar with 8 GB memory, and when running sample renderings via OpenGL assistance. As for the display .... that was no contest; the Air has a great display, but the Retina proved best for viewing high density images and computed renderings. The one noted caveat with the Retina was a noted momentary lag when displaying very large image files.
With identical prices for my elected configurations, I returned the Air and went for the more compact and capable Retina display equipped model. Good luck in choosing ... I know it isn't an easy call.- Answered by Karel N from Escondido

Should I get a Mac Pro or IMac?
I am an independent filmmaker with a MacBook Pro 2011 and Am looking to purchase a new computer for post production editing, nothing too advanced or special effects, simple Final Cut Pro editing.

Answerbuy a new macbook pro when the warranty of your old one runs out. That way you don't break copyright laws for Final Cut Pro, + Final Cut pro on the app store is +$100. Basically, you need a computer with iphoto, imovie, imovie HD, isquint, Image Tricks, and of course (my favourite) 'gimp' (without ' ' ).
I hope this will help you. Your say is final.- Answered by Jacob B from Sydney

how do I get files off usb2 if there is only usb 3 on the new macbook pros?
My current MacBook pro crapped on me and despite your wonderful tech people, they could not retrieve the data from my hard drive. I am wondering, if I buy a new MacBook pro, how do I get the information that I have on numerous usb 2 onto the new laptop if it only has usb 3 ports available?
Also, I have a time machine back up on an external hard drive but I am afraid that a virus may have been the culprit of the significant damage done. The only things that I care about on that back up are my photos in iPhoto and in photo booth, is it possible just to import those items and nothing more from the time machine backup?- Asked by James J from Edmonton

AnswerUSB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0, so using your thumb drives or external HDs or what-have-you won't be a problem.
If you fear a virus inflicted your data on the hard drive, I would be wary of ANY file you import over to the new computer, but, yes, you can pick and choose what to reinstall. Check out Migration Assistant,- Answered by Ross G from Austin

Can I upgrade the memory and SSD storage after I bought MacBook Pro with Retina display?

Best AnswerLooking at the pictures, it appears that the RAM is soldered to the MB, so you probably can't upgrade it. It does appear that the Flash Storage could potentially be upgraded, but it uses a proprietary card format (not the more common SSD 2.5" drive format), so you probably won't be able to get a larger card from Apple anytime soon (and if you could, it would be less expensive to just buy the larger storage now).
