Can I use my lightning to USB cable to connect my iPad mini to my Apple iPad World Travel Adapter Kit

I have an Apple World Travel Adapter Kit that I use with my iPad 2.
Can I connect my iPad Mini to ithe Travel Adapter Kit using the lightning to USB cable that I also use for charging?

If used to connect to my car (Chevy Volt), can I control iPod functions?

The Chevy Volt does not use Bluetooth for music functions, just for calls. The USB charging cable on previous iPhones is connected to a USB port in the car. This allows album cover artwork to appear on the car's touchscreen and allows the driver to select songs, albums, playlists, audiobooks, shuffle mode, fast forward, rewind, skip, etc.
I am trying to determine if the cable that comes with the iPhone 5 will allow the same sort of control. It appears the Lightning to Dock Connector won't allow iPod functions of the iPhone to be controlled (*iPod Out not supported).

How long is this cable?

I used to have a 2m 30pin connector which was a decent length for a phone charger but now I'm stuck with this short one! When I used the old 30pin connector it could reach from the wall plug between my desk and bed to use on both but now I have to charge my brand new iPhone5 on the floor which is as you can imagine, not very safe!
