Does the smart cover fit with a hard shell case on the back?

I have one of the new superdry hard shell cases on the back of my iPad 2 and it has a bit of room on one of the sides and I wondered whether the smart cover case would fit onto it.

Do I have to buy any cover when purchasing an iPad2?

When I visited an Apple store, they say if I want to buy an iPad2, I HAVE TO buy the smart cover as well, but I don't really like to buy a cover right now. So is that mandatory??
