Can I use Time Capsule as a storage device as well as backup for my iMac using Time Machine, or can I only use it to back up files with Time Machine?
I'm currently using a WD 500GB Drive, which has a habit of turning itself into a standby state despite preference settings keeping it always on, and I have to restart the drive every time this happens, which is an inconvenience when storing files and no storage device is found when saving. I want to replace the WD with a 2TB Time Capsule and use the Time Capsule as a storage device, as well as a back up device via Time Machine for my iMac.

I have 2T Time Capsule backing up iMac 500GB HD. I want to add an 1T external drive to be backed up in Time Capsule along with HD. If possible, how?
In System Preference/Tim Machine 'Option' window, there a list of drives. Above the list is "Exclude these item to back up". I checked (-) and highlighted the external drive I want to beck up along with iMac HD, thinking that if I take it off the 'exclude' list I would be adding it to back up. Then I started getting back up error messages. I added it back to the 'exclude' list and everything is fine again.
At the Apple Store, I was told Time Machine does not back up external drive and that I should use Backup 3. In Back Up 3.1.2. the Time Capsule does not show up as a storage device.- Asked by Butkui C from Seattle

Can the TC do double duty. i.e. as an internet router/back up device in one home, then as a back-up device only in a second home?
Here's the deal, we have two homes. In the main house we would use the TC to replace an existing Airport Extreme to function as the wireless internet router (as the Extreme currently does, working with a device from our microwave wireless provider) plus, of course, as back-up for three Macs.
Then, when we travel to California for winter, can we bring the Time Capsule down there, plug it into a wall outlet and use it simply as a back-up AND bridge device with the existing AirportExpress. (I'd rather not undo the Express as it plugs into the wall behind the stereo amplifier/tuner and is hard-wired into it for iTunes, Pandora, etc. play over the amp which then plays throughout the house speakers.) Would the TC function OK in a network as a 'subordinate' to the Express?- Asked by E. William B from Sagle

Can I use Time Capsule as 1) NAS and / or 2) iTunes server?
So I have a few devices which access the network at home:
- MacBook Pro
- MacBook Air
- iPad 2
- iPhone 4
- Apple TV
- Samsung internet-connected TV
- Playstation 3
- Xbox 360
I'm trying to decide on a single device which can act as an NAS, a single depository for files, and as an iTunes server to use primarily with Apple TV but certainly not limited to this.
Can the Time Capsule function as both, in addition to being the Time Machine back up machine? Neither? Maybe one? No one seems to have a clear answer on this.
Frankly, if it does only Time Machine back ups, I'll be looking elsewhere.- Asked by Don C from Los Angeles

Back up one time capsule to another
I already have an older 1Gb TC. I'm now thinking of getting another one, probably 2Gb. What I'd like to do is store my iTunes library etc. on the 1Gb TC and use Time Macine to back up that to the new 2Gb TC. Does anyone know if that's possible? Or will TM only see a Time Capsule as a target rather than a source?

What's the best way to back up Time Capsule itself?
If I want to protect my data against physical theft or fire, I *think* I would need Time Capsule's data sent into the cloud or backed up to an external hard drive that I could store offsite. Is that correct?
Would the latter be as simple as taking a 2TB external drive, connecting it to Time Capsule, and then copying Time Capsule's files over to the external drive (I presume via one of the Macs on the network) from time to time. Is that fairly easy?- Asked by Gabriel Thomas J from Petaluma

Can I use 2 Time Capsules to alternate back ups? So that one can be stored off site?
We just had a fire in an adjoining office which is "motivating" us to improve our back up situation. Ideally having one back up in office and one off site and then rotating every 2-3 days. Would this be a seamless swap out of Time Capsules? Or would certain settings need changed at each swap out? We have about 4 Macs on the network.
