  • External Hard drive attached to AirPort Extreme Base Station questions ?

    Hi,

    A few questions below

    1) What is the file system that the External Hard drives mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station uses ?

Is it HFS ? I need network attched storage for HFS format to store iphoto libraries across computers without have both turned on . I have NAS support now for NTFS and EXT3 but iphoto does not work on those partition types very well.

    2) If I set up the hard drive mounted via USB to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to have multiple partitions will all of those portions be seen by my MAC computers? I.e if I set up a partition for time machine of a macbook, a partition for a time machine of a mac mini, and then a third for data sharing will all be mounted and seen by the macs.

    3) Can you rsync a hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station to another hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station if using a external hub . . I.e create a backup copy of the HFS drive .

  • AC/DC Power    Hi all,  Does this device works in Europe ? I ask the question because in Europe they have a different kind of plugs for AC Power.

I often travel beetween US, CAN, France, Germany and Belgium. In Europe AC power is different : other plugs and sockets, 230V 50Hz.
Do I need to have 2 Airport Extreme (1 for EU +1 USA/CAN) or I can use an adaptor as I use for my iphones and my mac ?

  • two wireless networks on one airport extreme

    Hi there,

I have an Airport Extreme set up to offer a wireless network throughout my flat, using a couple Airport expresses to increase the range to my office and back garden. I also use one of the Airport Expresses to run AirTunes so that I can play my music in the garden from my Apple TV.

The problem is that the signal drops out if my computer is on and downloading emails or surfing the net.

Is it possible to set up two wireless networks on the Airport Extreme so that I use one solely for access the internet using my computer and devises and one for my AppleTV and Airtunes?

Sure, I can set up a Guest Network (or similar) but, I guess my question is - will having two WiFi's set up still have the same problem where the music cuts out (obviously, if the music is cutting out, my internet connection is being hampered too)?

If you can make sense of it and are able to offer me some advice, I'd be grateful!

    Cheers,

    D

  • Can I use Airport Extreme as my modem for fiber optic Hi Speed Internet

I currently use ATT DSL and have a Two Wire Router supplied by ATT. In two weeks I'm having ATT DSL replaced with fiber optic hi speed internet. Do I need to by a modem (not supplied by internet provider) or can I use my Airport Extreme as my modem?

  • Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of an Airport Express base station?

I currently have a wireless network configured using an Airport Express as a base station, with 3 additional Airport Express units connected to extend the range of that base station and to stream iTunes music to each unit, each of which is connected to a powered speaker or hi-fi.

What I want to do now is add the more robust Airport Extreme as a another range extender for the Airport Express base station and place the new Airport Extreme in a central location in our home. We will not be using the Extreme for anything except 802.11n range extension (e.g, no music streaming), but I am expecting that with its additional power and range, it can provide wireless connectivity to iPhones, laptops and iPads that are used typically in this core area of the home. My Airport Express base station and the additional range extension units are located in adjacent home office, libraary and fitness center rooms all located on the same (ground level) floor. The base station is perhaps 50 feet away from where I will situate the new Airport Extreme range extender unit. It is nearly of sight with two intervening windows and a single 6" thick brick/concrete wall between the base station and where I will place the Airport Extreme. With this understanding of what I need to accomplish, will the Airport Extreme fill the requirement? Every question I have browsed talks about the opposite situation--extending the range of an Extreme using Airport Express routers. My primary use of these products is streaming music and secondarily we obtain widespread use of wireless connectivity for other needs.

Another option for an Airport Extreme is to locate one of these units in upstairs in a distant, remote area of the house. I have supplied this area with a CAT-5 cable that originates in my office using an ethernet switch, so a wireless router can be added to deliver service in that area. Will this work using the Extreme? Thanks!!

  • Airport Extreme VLAN support

I am looking at getting the latest model of the Airport Extreme but I have a question first. Does the Airport Extreme support IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Packet tagging? I have a firewall with the ability to have VLANs to segregate traffic. If possible what I would like to do is set the Guest wireless to a separate VLAN than the normal traffic. An before you suggest it the Airport will not be going in front of my firewall.

  • Airport Extreme + BT Broadband

    hey guys, quick question.

i recently got a replacement BT Home Hub 3, and it has since botched my home share between itunes/ipad/iphone/atv - i know this isnt a fault of the computer as the homeshare works fine on another router, so the aim is to add an airport extreme into the mix! but heres the issue...

i live in the back end of nowhere with no more than a bad ADSL signal, so no BT Infinity modem for the WAN port. i dont wish to fork out for a 3rd party ADSL modem, so the question is, is it possible to hook up the HH3 to the AE as a modem? Does anybody know if this is possible? or have any experience with it? or know what settings i'd have to change and where, and on which hardware?

    cheers folks

I have a router which has poor wireless. • Airport extreme WDS capabilities

I want to replace my router with an Apple Airport Extreme. My question is that Airport Extreme can do the same thing that my current router does. My Router is located in LIVING ROOM. It communicates wirelessly with cable modem via WDS (Wireless Distribution Service). It means collects wireless signals wirelessly from cable modem and distributes these signals both wirelessly and wired. Sometimes it works great but sometimes makes me crazy. Distance between cable modem and router is 40 meters but some rooms and walls decrease the signal quality.

    1) Is Apple Airport Extreme has same capabilities with my old router? in terms of WDS between third party modem and AE base station.
    2) It might help to increase the signal quality or not?

  • Thinking of purchasing an Extreme base station. Purchasing in Japan, so I have a few questions.

My current router has issues with most of my more modern wireless devices.(It is quite old. D-LInk DI-634) I am looking into a MD031.

Despite only having Windows based machines, but two iOS devices, will the setup be that much more involved than if I were to have a Mac?

Since I am temporarily living in Japan, and will be purchasing it here, will the language be locked in Japanese only, is there a language option setting, or will the station detect the region and language automatically from my devices, and adjust as such?

If in the future that we return to the United States, will I be able to adjust the settings and channels for it to operate in the US? I imagine that looking at the channel overlaps in the tech specs portion between Japan and the US on the Airport Extreme webpage that I would have nothing to worry about, but I want to ask just to be sure.

    Thank you.

  • Does the Airport Extreme support QoS yet?

It has been over six months since this question was last asked. Has the product been updated for QoS yet?

My home network includes a VoIP ATA, which is very sensitive to higher bandwidth network activity (video streaming, downloading, etc). A lack of QoS would be a deal-breaker.

  • Does the Airport Extreme use WPA2 Personal for security?

I ask this question because I want to bridge via ethernet between the Airport Extreme and my WRT160N Linksys.

  • I have an older AirPort Extreme that I would like to replace. My question is, what makes this better than say a Linksys E Series router?

I am looking to replace my AirPort extreme because it drops my connection at least 10 times a day. I have tried every channel on the device, factory reset it many times, and it just doesn't work. There are no other wireless networks nearby and we don't have any devices here that would interfere with it. What makes the new AirPort Extreme better than the Linksys E2000, E2100L or E3000? Thanks.

  • i have an airport extreme base station and it works flawlessly. one question, is there a way i can see what devices are attached to the base station.

my old net-gear router had a website that i could log in as an administrator and see all of the router statistics; ie attached devices, wep settings, firmware updates, etc

  • Will the Airport Extreme Base Station work in Japan on 100 volts? Posting to earlier questions have 110 v as minimum.

Technical Specification does not specify voltage levels supported. We need 100 volts since we are moving to Japan.

  • I'm new to MAC so pardon the dumb question :-)

I currently pay for High Speed internet though my cable company (in which I have a modem). So you mean to tell me, if I buy the Airport Extreme Base Station, load the software, and I will magically have wireless internet in my apartment? If so, thats fantastic because im tired of dragging this ethernet cable half way across my living room to get the internet on my new mac book.

I would appreciate any help. As I said, I am new to MAC, but so far I am LOVING IT..

    Thanks!

  • Will the airport extreme work with a time warner cable modem?

I have a cable modem that was given to me by time warner cable, my ISP. My question is, will an airport extreme work correctly with something like this?

Also, my ISP only allows five devices to be connected at one time, so I was wondering if this would be an issue, or if any devices connected to the airport extreme would all be counted as just one?
