mac os x 10.5.8 need upgrading?

I have mac os x 10.5.8 and there is no more software updates. Is it a good idea to upgrade to mac os x 10.6 snow leopard? will everything on my computer still run?

Can I download the upgrade from 10.5.8 to snow leopard?

If this is Snow Leopard 10.6, then how do I get 10.6.4? Does that come as an update, or will I have to purchase that as well?

I have 10.5.8, and im wanting 10.6.4.
This update is the only thing that i've seen for purchase, but this is 10.6, so what I'm wonder is - does that come as an update, or will I have to purchase that as well?

I'm confused. Have a Mac OS X 10.5.8. want to upgrade to 10.6 BUT it says I have to running Leopard. I don't see that anywhere on my MAC

I am not very computer software savvy - so how do I know if I even have the basic Leopard or Lion or whatever animal it is that you need to even begin to upgrade to 10/6 or better?
