Can you train a universal IR remote controller to communicate with a new mac, or do you HAVE to use the Apple Remote?

Does the new remote now allow me to remotely navigate and choose movies / shows / podcast episodes from my sofa? or just pause/play/playlist nav?

For example, right now I'm watching an episode of The Totally Rad Show on my TV via an old iphone and a universal doc but I cannot use my existing remote to select a movie or TV show to watch. Does this change with the new remote?

currently using the old remote i can only change songs within the current artist which frankly is not very usefull

The previous version of the remote was very limited with the iPhone. How is this remote different in functionality compared to the previous version?

The previous remote did not allow for menu navigation nor selection through the media categories. I am wondering if this new remote will allow navigation specific to the iPhone or if it is still just a play, pause, forward, backward, volume up and down remote.

Can an iPod Speaker with IR be controlled with this?

Such as the JBL On Stage.

Because the remote that came with this is garbage.

What's the difference ( just to control your iPod) from the standard ( first remote)

Are there other functions? I'm asking strictly to control my iPod.
