what is a universal dock?

i just bought the apple remote and it isn't working. I read I need a universal dock... help.

Will this remote work on any universal dock or just newer ones?

I have an older universal iPod dock, just one of those little all white ones, and it has an IR sensor on it, but will this remote still work with it? I wasn't sure if this remote would work or not, I don't want to waste my money on it if it only works with newer model docks.

Can you actually view the menus and playlists of an Ipod thats connected to a Universal Dock?

I have a 160GB Ipod Classic and I want to get the Universal Dock to hook it up to my Tv and Home theater system. My Exact question is: Can I view the menus and playlists from my Ipod on my tv?

currently using the old remote i can only change songs within the current artist which frankly is not very usefull

Why does the remote require the Universal Dock or iPod with a dock connector or iPhone? Can I just use it for my macbook that is hooked up to my TV?

Does this remote you can paired with Universal dock, because I'm trying 2 pair it and it doesn't work. It's work only when you control the music.

I read the instructions how 2 pair the remote with the dock but it's not working....
