For Mac air how do you connect to second screen

Use the air for my only computer but need bigger screen for office spreadsheet work. I have the 13 inch screen on the air. I have an existing monitor and would like to connect to the air while in the office and use booth screens at the same time. How do you make that happen?

Can I use this device to run dual (Side-by-Side) monitors from an iMac?

If I use this adapter and an additional VGA monitor, can I set up the secondary monitor to serve as an extension of my desktop or will it only duplicate what appears on the primary screen?

I have a very old white Macbook model A1181, will this port fit into my computer?

The port and the plug don't look compatible. My port is a rectangle with two thin slots in the top and bottom and a thicker filled area in the center. This plug looks like it has the opposite. Which adapter do I need to hook up my macbook to a computer monitor?
