H6395VC/A belkin 4 port aluminum usb2 hub.

I just purchased the H6395VC/A belkin 4 port aluminum usb2 hub. It comes with an electrical plug in, but the unit seems to function when only connected by the USB2 cable.

Is the paower connection actually not necessary? What is it's purpose

Can the hub be used on a Macbook Air computer (original version). It is very frustrating that this computer only has one USB drive!
