Will memory work in a Spring/Fall 2007 17-inch 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro? Is memory over 4GB (2x2GB) total be recognized in this model?

Looking at the Apple Support documentation for installing memory in this model, under "Additional notes" it reads "You can add two 4GB modules for a maximum of 8 GB of memory." However, "Refer to this table for the maximum amount of memory that can be recognized by these notebook computers:" states 4 GB.
