  • Phono inputs are designed for very low signal inputs (such as a turntable) where the input is in the order of millivolts. Standard inputs (like 3.5mm jack) are designed for normal level inputs from pre-amplified devices (like iPod). These signals are around 1 volt, up to 1000 times more than a turntable. Also, the way the amplifier handles the signal is different, because it amplifies the higher frequencies more than the low level frequencies.
