I just received mine and the outer material is NOT coated canvas. It is a synthetic vinyl, pressed with a bumpy surface texture. It looks as if it will wear better than coated canvas. I will certainly Scotch guard it first. The straps and facing are leather and the lining is synthetic fabric that looks very strong.
For all of those other unanswered questions - the roominess of this bag is impressive. The central zippered pocket for the laptop is not fixed on the bottom, which is nice as it gives room for more bulk either side. This central padded laptop pocket has a plastic zipper (so it won't scratch) and measures about 26 cm from top to bottom, and about 41 cm wide, leaving room for the zip. There is a small zipper pocket on the inside, a larger pocket on the side of the laptop pocket for iPad, and a two-compartment pocket on the other side of the bag for ipod/iphone and etc. There looks to be enough room for thick notebooks and books. I will be going to the library in the next few weeks and trying out its weight-bearing capacity, so will post updates.
This is an attractive bag with warm grey tones, very roomy and organised. If you buy it you will be quite happy with your purchase.
I find it ridiculous that neither the Apple site nor Michael Kors could give any more information about this product than they have, and hope that my addition here helps potential buyers.

Coated canvas. Similar to the Louis Vuitton coated canvas which is very hardwearing.
