What is a "powered" USB port and how do I know if my drive requires one?

    powered, as in it will have its on DC power supply to provide enough power to all 7 ports on the Hub. So you will need an additional outlet to plug this into. Would recommend this over non-powered hubs (i.e. the ones that only rely on the USB Host (your Mac/PC) for power).

  • Check the drive label or box, which should specify the power required the drive needs to operate. Anything under 500mA will be powered through a USB port, but a USB hub needs to have its own power source because a computer USB port wont power more than 1 device. If your drive has a power cord, then it requires the power source it won't run solely from the USB port
