what does the remote do?

What does the remote do exactly. If I am running and am listening to music can I answer the the phone with the remote and the adjust the volume. Please explain how it works

    If you have a compatible product, the remote can pause, play, skip forward, skip backward, answer and stop phonecalls, change the volume, and holding it down can allow you to use voice control.
