Another difference between the speakers is that the II (second edition) has a newly designed cover for it that Apple didn't fully show in the pictures. I have the first edition and love it, but i hate the cover on it. the second one solved this problem by making it foldable, so it takes up less space while it is open. I personally think it is the coolest, most important difference!

To add to the previous answer, internally they adjusted the Digital Sound Processor so that it the speaker has both a wide sound field, but also improved bass response.

Bose developes a new transducer called Neodymium, that reproduce a better sound. A deeper bass response and mayor clarity on mid's and hi's was the result of and make it more natural and accurate!!!
