Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
Product No Longer Available
What application can I use to get 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS Surround Sound?
I have not been able to get surround sound to work. I have tried using VLC and even playing a DVD from a plugg-in USB superdirve directly using the DVD Player application. I have a MBA late 2010 model. The audio does come though, but I don't get 5.1. I am connecting to my TV using HDMI and then Optical from my TV to my Surround Sound.
I have been able to play content using the TV and gotten 5.1 with my current setup so I know the TV supports 5.1 through the optical (as it should).
TV is: Samsung UN46C6300

Generally speaking, you should try to connect directly to surround sound from your MBA and then to the TV, but if you don't have a receiver that handles HDMI this is a problem. You need to make sure that your TV can receive surround sound and then also give out surround sound. Some TV's have a setting for Pass-Through (basically the TV doesnt process the signal from your MBA and it will just hand it off to the surround sound reciever to process. Lots of ifs, ands, or buts, hope it helps...
