I am in the process of switching from a 3 year old MacBook Pro to the new 13" with Retina display. I currently have to laboriously plug in 6 cables every day at my desk. I currently use a dongle to connect a standard VGA monitor, I don't see that option on my 13" Retina MacBook, what is the recommended way to connect a VGA monitor or Projector?

Thunderbolt to VGA display adapters are readily available from Apple.
I have a 13" MB Pro Retina as well. I use this dock to connect a few backup drives, audio, and a 24" Dell monitor via DVI. It supports VGA just as easily.

try a thunderbolt to VGA adapter or a usb hub attached to one of the usb ports on the belkin hub that has a VGA output. Works for me for 1 year.
