    No, you can actually use any external hard drive to use Time Machine, however, using a Time Capsule is the simplest method since it does not require you to plug in an external hard disk every time you want to back up your data. It simply runs in the background, keeping your data backed up.

  • No. I'm using a Seagate Free Agent on my Mac and an Iomega on my wife's Mac and both are fine--although the Seagate is ideally suited for Time Machine and is Mac-friendly in the "Mac version."
