A rigid card like a credit card is only needed if you wish to use this clip as a stand on a flat surface. You insert the card into the slot on the back to prop it up. For installing in a car using the car vents, you don't need a card.

The description states: "Works as a hands-free stand when you insert a card into the clip".
I believe the operative word here is "stand", meaning that the vent clip can be used to hold the iPhone upright on a table by inserting a card (i.e. credit card type) into the slot in the clip. This may make more sense if you look at the photos of the unit.

Don't know what that's about but no 'card' is required to use mine. This is the simplest and most portable car mount I've ever seen.
