A rigid card like a credit card is only needed if you wish to use this clip as a stand on a flat surface. You insert the card into the slot on the back to prop it up. For installing in a car using the car vents, you don't need a card.

  • The description states: "Works as a hands-free stand when you insert a card into the clip".

I believe the operative word here is "stand", meaning that the vent clip can be used to hold the iPhone upright on a table by inserting a card (i.e. credit card type) into the slot in the clip. This may make more sense if you look at the photos of the unit.

  • Don't know what that's about but no 'card' is required to use mine. This is the simplest and most portable car mount I've ever seen.
