Is this system expandable? In other words, can multiple speakers be placed around the house/apartment like the Sonos system?

AirPlay and the AirZone Series 1 do allow this in specific configurations.

If you have multiple AirZone Series 1 speakers around the house, you can use your computer running iTunes to play music to all of these speakers simultaneously.

If you wish to control these multiple speakers from your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, you can do this using Apple's Remote app available on the iTunes App Store. When you have that app, you can control your computer running iTunes, which will play through the multiple speakers.
