is there a quality difference between this cable (mini DP to HDMI directly) compared to the combination mini DP to DVI + DVI to HDMI ?

Going mini DP to HDMI (1 step) versus DP to DVI + DVI to HDMI (2 steps) the *video* quality should be the same, as DP, HDMI and DVI are all digital connections. But on the 2-step process you'll lose the audio because DVI doesn't carry audio.

Of course, if you have a pre-2010 Mac whose DP doesn't output audio anyway, then going via DVI will be the same as directly to HDMI.

  • Any time you add something it degrades the signal and the way it distributes the signal you would not want to add a third cable and DVI does not support audio. Better yet would be if Apple started adding HDMI to their products.
