is the ensemble better than the duet 2?

Not necessarily, they're designed with different purposes in mind. They're both high quality 24-bit/192K interfaces and thus share comparable sound. However, the Enseble has an additional six channels over the Duet 2's two channel setup, in the process sacrificing portability. So it really depends on intended use, each is better for a specific task. I personally own a first generation Duet, and while it's great for recording on the go, it can be a hassle having to deal with only two channels at a time.
