After connecting directly to a computer with a built-in Thunderbolt port, you can turn on filesharing and use like any other direct attached storage device. Like SATA, FireWire, or USB.
You cannot connect to a router since those that support storage usually expect USB drives.
You can connect to OSX Server computers only if that computer has a Thunderbolt port, or if you share over the network to another computer where the drive is connected via a Thunderbolt port.
Sharing a drive over an Ethernet network will not benefit from Thunderbolt performance. You are limited to network speed.
