While the Airport Extreme does offer numerous features that the Airport Express does not, the ability to wirelessly stream music IS unique to the Airport Express.

  • Unfortunately, "Airtunes" (what Apple calls the ability to steam music wirelessly), is unique and only available on the Airport Express router.

  • While you cannot stream music to the airport extreme, you can connect an airport express up to the airport extreme via ethernet or wirelessly. This is known as WDS, a wireless distribution system made by apple. You can then use that airport express as a portal to stream music to, regardless of weather you are connected to the airport extreme or the airport express. However, in my experience, setting up WDS can be a fairly frustrating process, but if you think you know what you are doing, go for it. You can extend the range of your airport extreme, add another printer, and stream music.
