Yes, you must use the supplied AC adapter. There is not sufficient Thunderbolt bus power to operate this drive.
Neither the computer nor an Apple Thunderbolt Display can power the LaCie Little Big Disk. The AC adapter is always necessary.
As for power: Thunderbolt ports on every Mac must each supply the required Thunderbolt bus power. The Apple Thunderbolt display only provides power to the Thunderbolt port on the display. The captive cable on the display does not supply any power, and should be connected to the Thunderbolt port on the computer, or to extend the daisy chain if the drive is first connected between the computer and the display.

Yes. The drive will not power on, nor be recognized by your Thunderbolt Mac without it.
I'm VERY curious if the Apple Thunderbolt Display will power this over the TB connection itself since it in-itself is a power source - where the MacBook Pro's are not.
