I can confirm that these cards (5770/5870) have functioning audio out via the Mini Displayports with the NewerTech MDP ro HDMI adapter, but so far only in WINDOWS.
The same cards will not provide access to the audio controller in any form thus far in any version of 10.6 for any Mac Pro other than the 2010 model, which initially came with a special version of 10.6.4 containing the audio driver(s).
Until somebody figures out which driver(s) are needed and how to obtain them (as these cards come with NO SOFTWARE INSTALLER), only the 2010 Mac Pros will have active audio out capability in OS X.

According to Apple's Knowledge Base article TS3065, Apple added support for their Macbook Pros released back in April as well as the new iMacs and Macbooks that were recently released. While this doesn't guarantee that the new graphics cards will support it, I find it highly likely.
As a note: I don't believe Apple specifically disabled the support for this in the OS. If I recall correctly, it was a hardware limitation with the graphics chipsets that were used. I don't believe older models can support HDMI even with a software update.

Mini DisplayPort has audio in the ports, in the cables, and in the spec. Apple has disabled it in the OS.
