In order to transfer files from my old PC onto my new Mac Book Pro, will a regular external hard drive work or does it have to Apple's brand?

Yes, it will work to transfer files to you new mac, but you wont be able to save anything on it, because you would need to format it in mac format.
So, you should have 2 HD if you have also a PC, as I do.

  • any hard drive will most likely work.
it might need to be formatted for the windows machine, but that is no problem
use the migration assistant, it is dedicated to the task you are describing (PC>Mac^, Mac> Mac^, Mac^>Mac) (^ indicates the machine accepting the data)
    Good luck
