If I run win7 w/parallels, can I back up my windows data alongside my mac data?

Make sure you install Parallels tools and then you can use any drive that the Mac can see. However, if you wish to use the drive with any other physical Windows systems you won't be able to access it without software that lets you mount an HFS+ drive. I have this same drive and use both Parallels and physical PCs. I partitioned my drive with an HFS+ partition for Time Machine and an NTFS partition for data that I move back and forth with my VM and PCs. You would also need NTSF-3G (which is free) if you go my route. But, you only need that if you want to use the drive on a physical PC as well as Parallels.
