If you are away, you will need to find a Wi-Fi source near where you are. Many restaurants, coffee houses, and libraries offer free wi-fi to the public. The iPod Touch can access any wireless network you have permission to use. If you are somewhere that has secured wireless, you'll need to enter the access code (which it will remember) and then it will work fine.
You could also take an Airport Express with you, but you would then need a wired network to plug into. This is a good option if you are using a hotel, however.
