I have netflix and was told I should have a WAN router not a LAN to handle the load. Is this correct? If so, is the extreme a WAN router?

The Airport Extreme has a "WAN" port, this is the port that you use to plug into your internet access device or "Modem". Every internet service will provide some sort of network access device that converts the DSL or Cable signal to ethernet that will plug into your WAN port. The Airport extreme then has several LAN ports for connecting devices over ethernet, and then of course the Wireless network for wireless devices.
The Airport extreme is excellent for use with NetFlix, I have used it often for this purpose. How you configure your Airport extreme has a few variables, but Apples software for doing this is best in class and by far the easiest I have ever used, its called the Airport Utility in your utilities folder.

Yes, you will need as direct a connection as possible to produce the best results. Connect your modem's (or other internet gateway device) Ethernet cable to the single Ethernet WAN port of the Extreme. Connect wirelessly (or wired to the Extreme's three Ethernet LAN ports) to the Extreme's network and stream your Netflix. The Extreme provides excellent throughput. If you find Netflix not working perfectly, the problem is not the Extreme but is due to your ISP or inadequate bandwidth.
