I have is an AIRPORT EXTREME A1143. Is the new model that much better as far as speed and range? Lately speeds have slowed much on my old one.

Yes. Up to 25% better, plus the most important factor is the addition of MIMO technology which allows different speed clients to connect at their own speeds without slowing down the entire network. This would likely solve your problem while still allowing slower speed devices. However, an Extreme still only serves up to 50 clients.

The speed of the wireless network of your A1143 could not have slowed when serving only a single client. Wireless routers only provide slower service due to increased interference, greater demand from serving multiple clients, and/or when purposely accommodating a slower speed client.

When slower speed clients are allowed to connect to a faster speed network, all non-MIMO wireless routers that have multiple speed networking capability automatically slow down to the speed of the slowest client.

You can prevent this from happening by controlling access to your network, or by increasing the minimum speed requirement for wireless clients by changing the "Radio Mode" setting in AirPort Utility.

The A1143 has eight different Radio Mode settings to choose from - if not all are visible, press and hold the "option" (alt) key prior to clicking the Radio Mode popup.
