I have a mid 2011 iMac with 4gb ram.i want to upgrade to 8GB . Is it best to go with 2x 2GB or 1x 4GB

You will require 2 x 2 GB, as the machine will not boot up if only one of the bottom slots is filled. Alternatively you can purchase 2 x 4 GB (or 4 x 4 GB).
