Macbooks (and Macbook pros) use a combined analog/optical-digital out from the headphone jack. If you bought THIS toslink cable then it came with a 3.5mm adapter which fits on one end of the cable to plug into your headphone jack. If you purchased a stock one (from Best Buy or something) then you'll need to find a compatible adapter via a google search.

  • There is no port on your notebook for the Toshlink cable. The only audio out port is the headphone jack. I use a standard av cord with the headphone jack end on it to get the audio through my tv and can also be hooked up to a stereo.
