    Depending on the devices, yes:

If your hard drive has FireWire interfaces, you can chain them. Depending on what KIND of FW interfaces it has will determine what sort of cabling you need.

    EG:

    Camera has one FW400 port
HD has two FW 800 ports and a FW 400 port
Connect HD to computer with FW800, connect camera to HD with FW400.

    Camera has one FW400 port
    HD has two FW400 ports
Connect HD to computer with FW800-FW400 cable, connect camera to HD with FW400.

  • The answer is 'maybe'.

firewire supports daisy chaining devices, but not all devices support daisy chaining. I have an iMac which I have hung 4 firewire drives off of this way.
The desktop LaCie drives support daisy chains, whereas their All Terrain drives do not.

According to the Final Cut Express doc there is also an issue with Canon video cameras [or maybe it was Tom W's Editing workshop book (memory fails)] mentions that Canon failed to implement the spec properly so the camera must have it's own firewire channel.

Conclusion: be careful in selecting your equipment. Best of all is to test before you buy.
